1 pound 96% lean ground beef (or extra lean ground chicken/turkey breast)
1/2 cup diced onion
1/2 cup diced bell pepper
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup ketchup (I use Simply Heinz Ketchup)
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
6 (~1 3/4 ounce) whole wheat hamburger buns (such as Pepperidge Farm Bakery Classics)
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium to medium high heat. Add ground beef, onion, bell pepper, and celery; stir frequently, breaking up the meat into crumbles. Continue to cook until meat is browned and vegetables are tender, about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Add ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, salt and black pepper; stir to combine. Continue to cook for another 2 to 4 minutes or until the sauce is thickened.
