This is another kid friendly, easy meal to add to your weeknight rotation. I often go between using ground beef and ground chicken or turkey depending on what's on sale in the grocery store. They all taste good because there's lots of flavor in the extras you add in and you're not getting ingredients you can't pronounce. If you want to opt out of the bun, this also tastes good as a lettuce wrap (I'd suggest Bibb or Romaine) or you can serve it atop salad greens! You'll see the nutrition information below both for the filling mixture by itself (first label) and along with a bun (second label).
1 pound 96% lean ground beef (or extra lean ground chicken/turkey breast)
1/2 cup diced onion
1/2 cup diced bell pepper
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup ketchup (I use Simply Heinz Ketchup)
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
6 (~1 3/4 ounce) whole wheat hamburger buns (such as Pepperidge Farm Bakery Classics)
Yield: 6 servings
Serving Size: about 1/2 cup (or 4 ounces) filling and 1 hamburger bun
